This volume collects the poetry of Andrej Sládkovič (1820–1872), the pen name of Andrej Braxatoris, one of the leading poets of Slovak Romanticism and of the generation of Ľudovít Štúr, who established standard literary Slovak. It was published about 1900 in Turčiansky Svätý Martin, the centre of Slovak cultural life at the time. Sládkovič, a Lutheran pastor, is best known for Marína (1846), a long lyrical poem about his love for Marína Pišlová that joins personal love with love of country and is often called the longest love poem in world literature, and for Detvan (1853), an epic about a young man from the Detva region and a meeting with King Matthias Corvinus. His collected poems also include shorter lyrics and occasional verse, and they remain central to Slovak literature.
